How Gut Health Affects Your Mood

From Naturally blog:

Believe it or not, the term “gut-feeling” isn’t just a metaphor. The condition of your gut can actually affect your mood! While the brain is responsible for your emotions, your gut is actually connected to your brain through nerve connections, hormones, cytokines, neurotransmitters and certain metabolites that send messages. So the health of your gut plays a significant role in the health of your brain and your mood.

Here’s how it works
Your gut sends messages to your brain with neurotransmitters that may affect your mood, appetite, thoughts, emotions, and even sleep. It also sends nutrients and fuels to your brain when your digestive system is healthy. But when your gut is stressed by everyday life or unhealthy diet, it affects the messages sent to your brain! This makes having a healthy balance in your gut important!

How to stay gut-happy
There are a few things you can do to keep your gut healthy and yourself happy! Learn more.

Eat more fiber: High-fiber foods have prebiotic fibers that are good for the healthy bacteria in your gut. The bacteria in your gut in turn work to produce metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids that have been implicated in gastrointestinal functional, (neuro)immune regulation and host metabolism.

Take a probiotic: Probiotic supplements can help you maintain a healthy balance of good bacteria in your gut. Those bacteria numbers play a huge role in your gut health.

Relax: Try to avoid stressing your mind and your body. Stress can make it hard on the good bacteria in your gut to thrive.

Avoid unnecessary antibiotics: Sometimes you need them, but antibiotics usually can’t tell the difference between good and bad bacteria. So taking antibiotics can take away from the healthy bacteria in your gut that are working to absorb nutrients.

A happy gut means a happier life, so don’t forget about taking care of your gut health!

Healthy all season long: Tips to thrive during the holidays

From Naturally Blog, October 2018.

It’s easy to have a love-hate relationship with the holidays.  On the one hand, it’s a wonderful season full of friends, family, and traditional get-togethers, but it’s also the season of busy schedules, to-do lists, and harsh weather.

No matter how you feel about this time of year, it’s a great idea to take care of your health and watch your stress levels.

Here are a few tips to keep your stress down and your immunity up—so you can thrive during the holidays, not just survive!

Make a list of the things you need to doWe get it—there’s a lot that needs to be done. But don’t stress out about the big picture and instead make yourself a checklist. Make one for the things you need to do, the things you need to buy, and any other task at hand. You can check things off daily or weekly, but the important part is seeing your progress, staying focused on your to-dos, and getting things done in an organized fashion! Oh, what a relief it is, and how you’ll love the feeling of seeing your plan come together!

Take time to restNo one is built to work around the clock, and sometimes things can wait until tomorrow. Set aside time each day to relax, read a book, take a hot bath, or drink a warm cup of tea. i.e. take time to smell the roses.  Do something you enjoy doing, and don’t worry about all those lists. This will help your body and your mind to de-stress. For extra support, try Stress Relief Complex*, stress relief you can take safely every day.

Be consistent with your dietGood nutrition is essential to a strong immune system. Ensure to add some wholesome, nutrient-rich foods to your diet like fruits, veggies, eggs, lean meats, etc. And for any nutritional gaps in your diet, supplement with a multivitamin like the one in Vitalizer™.

Support your immune healthVitamin C and D are crucial in boosting your immunity during the colder days. Vitamin C can be found in fresh fruits and vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, parsley, citrus fruits, kiwis, and strawberries. For a quick boost, try Vitalized Immunity™, a fizzy citrus drink with the vitamin C equivalent of 16 oranges. Vitamin D3 is another powerful vitamin that helps support immune function and strong bones, but our bodies can’t produce adequate amounts when we don’t get enough sunlight. To supplement, use Vita-D3® for a boost. If you are looking for specialized daily support to help maintain healthy immune function, we recommend supplementing with Nutriferon.

Don’t forget to exercise. BenefitsOfHealthyWeightSchedule in and maintain your fitness routine, and don’t let the cold weather be an excuse not to work out. Exercise is not only a great way to stay in shape but also helps you alleviate stress and is an immunity booster.  If you’re not used to exercising indoors, try taking a guided workout class.

Focus on what’s important. Remember the season isn’t about getting everything done—it’s about the people you spend it with. Focus on the good things and be grateful for all that you have. And lastly, enjoy your holidays.
