“67% of wealthy watch 1 hour or less of TV. every day vs. 23% for poor.” Tom Corley, RichHabits.net
“Time is money, and money is time.” so goes the old adage. We can conclude, in other words, that those who have learned to use the asset of time in profitable ways, and have learned NOT to waste it, are able to accrue wealth. This is telling: those who would be wealthy focus on accomplishing specific goals and use their time by design, managing this element as closely as they do their bank accounts, and making it pay!
But if you’re like me, it’s just too easy to let time slip through your fingers. Doesn’t it make sense then, if one of our career goals definitely includes a degree of wealth, that we should find out once and for all what is stopping us from making our time count? How do we turn time into money?
One thing throwing us off may be that we’re NOT recognizing when we are wasting time with unprofitable activity, whether over indulging in entertainment, or spending wa-ay too much time on one task, or even just losing precious time with “busy-work” i.e. a time-wasting activity disguised as real work (but which utterly fails the test of genuine work because it does not advance us toward our target goal.
A trick I’m learning is to set a timer for daily tasks. Then, rather than taking the luxury of an hour — imagine!!! — to simply review a new training segment, for example, after positioning this task in it’s place of third or fourth down on the to-do list, it’s better to designate a quick 20 minutes to get it done before moving on to the next job. Thus, three items instead of merely one, can be accomplished in the same time frame.
Suggestion: Take control of your future. Plan. Dream big and write down the amount you wish to represent your total worth in dollars 20 years from now. Then outline your professional career path with that goal in mind.
Get down to the nitty gritty with plenty of details. Plan each day the night before. Plan each week the weekend before. Plan each month at the end of the previous month. Write down specific tasks or goals that you need to complete in order of priority, then check them off at the end of the day.
No doubt your days, weeks and months will be filled with productivity, resulting in a bigger payday, a brighter future, and a wealthier you!
